Manufacturing Paradigm Shifts: "AI-Powered Autonomous Manufacturing Is Key to Securing a Competitive Edge in Manufacturing Technology"

Professor Youngjae Jang of KAIST presented his vision for AI-driven autonomous manufacturing at the 2023 AI Autonomous Manufacturing Innovation Strategy Forum, highlighting it as a solution to labor shortages and supply chain challenges. Professor Jang pointed out the limitations of rule-based automation and emphasized that autonomous technologies, which enable machines to recognize changes and make decisions independently, are essential to maintaining Korea's manufacturing competitiveness. He also introduced innovative technologies already deployed in industrial environments, including large-scale robot orchestration and digital twin-based simulation.
In particular, he demonstrated how AI-powered design automation can shorten engineering processes and how large language models (LLMs) can enable robot operations without language barriers, illustrating the practical impact of autonomous manufacturing. CEO Jang also emphasized the urgent need for government-led infrastructure development and data standardization to strengthen Korea's competitiveness in autonomous manufacturing. He further stated that Korea should seize the opportunity created by the restructuring of global supply chains and foster autonomous manufacturing as a new growth industry for the country.
