From Conveyor Belts to Physical AI: A Paradigm Shift in Manufacturing

Professor Youngjae Jang of KAIST and CEO of DAIM Research emphasized the need for small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt dark factories (unmanned factories) during a policy forum at the National Assembly on the 29th. Professor Jang explained that, as manufacturing shifts toward robot-centric operations, operating systems that optimize entire factories through collaboration among robots will become a key competitive advantage. He described Physical AI, which understands and interacts with the physical world, as "intelligence in motion," and stated that Korea can achieve global leadership if it takes the lead in building the Physical AI ecosystem.
Professor Jang also highlighted DAIM Research's second-place finish at the INFORMS IAAA competition as evidence of Korea's opportunity to lead in the field of Physical AI. To help address the challenges small and medium-sized manufacturers face in adopting robotics, DAIM Research plans to distribute its robot design automation software free of charge next year in collaboration with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. Finally, Professor Jang emphasized the importance of building systems that transform the entire industrial structure, rather than focusing solely on individual technologies.
