Developing Smart Factory Standards to Support SMEs

In an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper, CEO Youngjae Jang, Professor at KAIST, emphasized that the smart factory ecosystem must be transformed by moving beyond conventional support focused solely on deploying automation equipment and instead adopting bold strategies and establishing practical industry standards. Pointing to the high engineering costs and inefficiencies caused by the lack of interoperability among solutions from different vendors, he proposed that the government establish industry-specific model factories to define and promote standardized practices.
To address these challenges, he introduced the achievements of the Physical AI Unmanned Factory Demonstration Lab established at KAIST with support from a demonstration project funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The demonstration lab integrates a wide range of manufacturing equipment under a single operating system (OS), enabling AI to make comprehensive decisions on factory-wide logistics flows and task priorities. DH Autolead, an automotive parts manufacturer, implemented the system and achieved tangible results, reducing manufacturing time by 30 minutes per steering wheel and improving productivity by 7.4%.
