Korea Takes the First Step Toward the World's First AI-Powered Unmanned Factory, Orchestrating Dozens of Robots and Sensors Simultaneously

The world's first Physical AI-powered unmanned factory platform, built with Korean technology, has been unveiled, marking the beginning of the transition to autonomous manufacturing. The Ministry of Science and ICT introduced the integrated Physical AI platform at KAIST and announced its strategy for securing core technological competitiveness. Developed by Professor Youngjae Jang's research team in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at KAIST, the Physical AI Demonstration Lab is a fully unmanned factory platform that orchestrates humanoid robots, collaborative robots, automation equipment, and sensors within a single operating system.
Moving beyond conventional automation centered on individual machines, the platform is designed to operate the entire factory through AI while optimizing material movement and production tasks in real time. Built entirely on Korean technologies across sensing, control, and data processing, it establishes a foundation for self-reliant factory automation. The government also plans to begin developing core technologies, including robot foundation models, world models, and AI semiconductors, with applications in the automotive, precision manufacturing, and shipbuilding industries. Its goal is to achieve demonstration results in key Physical AI application industries within the next one to two years.
