KAIST's Unmanned Factory Demonstration Draws Packed Press Crowd—Could It Become an Export Success?

  • 2026.03.23

KAIST demonstrated a 100% unmanned factory platform powered by Physical AI, showcasing technology that enables an entire factory to be orchestrated through AI. During the demonstration, logistics robots, collaborative robots, and humanoid robots operated simultaneously, illustrating how a factory can run without human intervention. The Physical AI Demonstration Lab integrates diverse robots and manufacturing equipment into a single orchestration system, where AI agents coordinate production and logistics while making real-time operational decisions.

The platform also incorporates safety management capabilities that detect hazardous situations involving workers and automatically coordinate equipment control. Built entirely on Korean technologies—from sensors and control systems to data processing—it establishes a foundation for self-reliant factory automation. Based on this platform, the research team plans to advance dark factories centered on a factory operating system (OS) and expand into global markets. Through continued AI advancement and data accumulation, the team aims to develop an export-ready system within the next two to three years.
