Inside the Physical AI Demonstration Lab: An Unmanned Factory Built with Korean Technology

The operational achievements of Korea's first integrated testbed, the Physical AI Demonstration Lab, built by the research team of Professor Youngjae Jang of KAIST (CEO of DAIM Research) at the KAIST Daejeon campus with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT, have been unveiled. Unlike conventional approaches that relied on overseas solutions, the demonstration lab was built entirely on Korean technologies, integrating sensors, controllers, software, and every other component in collaboration with domestic companies.

The Physical AI-powered unmanned factory platform orchestrates heterogeneous robots—including Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) operating on the factory floor and Overhead Hoist Transport (OHT) systems running overhead—through a single operating system (OS). In particular, it features DAVIS, a natural language-based AI agent that can diagnose sensor abnormalities and initiate corrective actions in response to workers' voice commands. An intelligent safety system also monitors whether workers are wearing safety helmets and detects unauthorized entry into restricted areas in real time, automatically controlling the production line when necessary. In addition, its high-speed digital twin simulation enables manufacturers to validate the return on investment (ROI) of equipment changes in a virtual environment before deployment, positioning the platform as a key foundation for Korea's next-generation manufacturing factory export model.
