The Path to becoming a 'Manufacturing Powerhouse': Advancing the Smart Manufacturing Ecosystem
Professor Young Jae Jang from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at KAIST emphasizes the need to enhance Korea’s smart manufacturing ecosystem to establish itself as a true “manufacturing powerhouse” amid the rapidly changing global manufacturing landscape driven by U.S.-China rivalry.
Major companies such as Samsung SDI and Hyundai Motor Group are implementing innovative strategies, including digital twins and Software-Driven Factories (SDF), highlighting the growing importance of AI-based unmanned manufacturing technologies. However, Korea lacks specialized manufacturing technology providers like Siemens in Germany.
To address this issue, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups is pursuing a strategy to foster “smart manufacturing specialist companies,” while the government plans to build regional testbeds and manufacturing innovation centers to enhance the smart manufacturing ecosystem.
